Founded on its river trade and railroad connections, Memphis has continued to be a place of change and progress. Memphis provided the birthplace of a new type of music, a significant role in the cotton industry, involvement in the Civil War and served as a hub during the Civil Rights Movement. As the largest port on the Mississippi River between St. Louis and New Orleans, Memphis developed as a transportation center for cotton in the area creating a bustling commerce center. Again in the 1970s, Memphis benefited from economic progression from revitalization efforts, making Downtown Memphis the hub for business, entertainment and urban living. Both the buzzing nightlife and the outdoor opportunities present a comprehensive blend of things to do for the residents of Memphis. Bluesy clubs and restaurants linger on Beale Street, while the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, baseball’s Memphis Redbirds and the hockey team of the Memphis RiverKings all play in the area. For a little time in the sunshine, residents can enjoy a bike ride on the bluff, kayaking the Mississippi or moseying on the Riverwalk. Nearly 300 acres of continuous parks and pedestrian walkways exist in Downtown, including Tom Lee Park and the Mud Island Greenbelt, which offer multi-use paths at the river’s edge. At the Mud Island River Park, residents and visitors alike enjoy the scale model of the river, the Mississippi River Museum and acres of open space. Downtown Memphis has emerged as the region’s center for arts and culture, presenting plenty of venues and galleries to residents. The Orpheum offers Broadway theatre, concerts and productions, while the Cannon Center for Performing Arts presents ballet, opera and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Art galleries in the South Main Arts District and The Edge offer a wide range of art in a variety of mediums.
